Is batch processing dead?

Every time a new technology shows up in the technology stack, its advocates are quick to dismiss the “old” ways of doing IT. They believe that the “new” shiny toy has a better solution for everything.

Don’t believe me? Let’s look at some technologies:

When SAP released SAP R/2 and SAP R/3 in the 90s, the theory behind it was that processing would move from batch to real-time (in case you wondering – that “R” stands for real-time). When SOA architecture became the new buzz, people proclaimed that batch scheduling was dead, as the Service Bus would replace all those needs...
